Ofgem Price Rise July 2026: What It Means for Your Energy Bills

2 mins to read

From 1 July 2026, the Ofgem energy price cap is rising again — and millions of UK households could feel the impact on their monthly bills.

Ofgem has confirmed that from 1 July to 30 September 2026, the energy price cap for a typical dual-fuel household paying by Direct Debit will rise to £1,862 per year, up from £1,641. That is a rise of around 13%, adding roughly £18 per month for the average household.

But here is the part many people misunderstand: the price cap is not a limit on your total bill. It limits the amount suppliers can charge per unit of gas and electricity and the daily standing charge. So, if you use more energy, you still pay more.

Why are energy prices going up?

Energy prices are still heavily affected by wholesale market costs, global supply issues, network costs, and the wider cost of maintaining the UK energy system. When wholesale gas and electricity prices rise, those increases eventually filter through to households on standard variable tariffs.

This means homeowners are once again facing higher costs — and for many families, this comes at the worst possible time. Summer should be the season where energy bills become more manageable, but this July rise means many households will still feel pressure even before winter arrives.

What are the new July 2026 unit rates?

From July, average Direct Debit rates are expected to sit around:

Energy type

Unit rate

Standing charge

Electricity

26.11p per kWh

57.19p per day

Gas

7.33p per kWh

29.04p per day

These are average rates and can vary depending on your region, supplier, payment method, and meter type.

What does this mean for homeowners?

For the average household, it means higher monthly energy costs from July. For larger homes, families, people working from home, or homes using more electricity during the day, the increase could feel even bigger.

If your home uses a lot of electricity for appliances, cooking, washing, charging devices, air conditioning, or future EV charging, then reducing your dependence on the grid is becoming more important than ever.

That is why more UK homeowners are now looking at solar panels and battery storage as a long-term way to protect themselves from rising energy costs.

How can solar help?

Solar panels allow your home to generate its own electricity from daylight. Instead of buying every unit of electricity from the grid, your property can produce clean energy directly from your roof.

When paired with battery storage, your home can store unused solar energy and use it later in the evening when electricity demand is higher. This helps reduce reliance on expensive grid electricity and gives you more control over your bills.

The key message

The July Ofgem rise is another reminder that energy prices are outside your control — but your energy setup does not have to be.

With solar panels and battery storage, homeowners can take a proactive step towards lower bills, greater energy independence, and long-term protection against future price increases.

July is coming. Bills are rising. Now is the time to look at solar.
