Solar panels are appearing on more UK rooftops than ever before. But following several recent fires where solar PV systems have been identified as a potential factor, homeowners are understandably asking a question that doesn't normally come up when they're thinking about solar:

Can solar panels cause a fire?

It's an important question. But it needs a sensible answer rather than a scary headline.

The council was careful not to conclude that the solar panels caused the fires. However, solar installations had been identified as a potential factor in three separate school fires, which was enough for the council to take precautionary action.

It's not the only reason the industry is paying more attention to the subject.

Research published by insurer QBE found UK fire services recorded 171 fires involving solar panels during 2024, compared with 107 in 2022 – an increase of almost 60%. Of those recorded in 2024, 97 occurred at residential properties.

Solar panels aren't usually the whole story

When people hear "solar panel fire", the natural assumption is that a panel has simply overheated and burst into flames.
